Enlightenment is the meaning of this Chinese-American actress’s name. She is Ming-Na Wen. She was born in Coloane Island of Macau on November 20, 1963. She lived in Hong Kong with her mother and brother then they migrated to United States. While studying, she also worked at her stepfather’s restaurant during her teenage years. She graduated with a degree in Fine Arts major in Drama at Carnegie Mellon University.
She first appeared in television in the year 1985; it was at the children’s series Mister Roger’s Neighborhood. After that, she played as Lien Hughes in As The World Turns, a soap opera that ran from 1988 to 1991. She was also part of The Joy Luck Club back in 1993 and ER, an NBC Drama series.
In 1990, Ming-Na Wen and writer Kirk Aaanes were married but it only lasted for three years. She married her second husband, Eric Michael Zee in 1995. They had two children: a daughter named Michaela and a son, Cooper Dominic.
Ming-Na Wen was also a voice actress. First, she dubbed Fa Mulan in Disney’s animated film Mulan in 1998. It was followed by Mulan II and Kingdom Hearts II. She was also part of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and The Batman as a voice actress for both projects. She became Aki Ross and Detective Ellen Yin respectively.
Ming-Na Wen became part of another television series called Stargate University as Camile Wray from 2009 up to 2011. She appeared in another Disney show, Disney Through the Decades. It was actually a documentary about the Walt Disney history.
In 2011, she was Senator Michaela Wen in the series Eureka. She was part of it as a villainess until 2012. In September 2013, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, an action-drama series was started where Ming-Na Wen played as Agent Melinda May.
She was ranked #49 in the “100 Most Inspiring Asian-Americans of All Time” by Goldsea Asian-American Daily. She was also chosen as one of the “100 Most Beautiful People in the World” in 2008 by the People’s Magazine.
