Asa Akira, born as Asa Takigami, is an American pornographic actress and film director. She was born from two Japanese immigrants on January 3, 1986 in Manhattan, New York. She has bagged several nominations and countless awards for her work in the adult film industry. These include being awarded as the “Porn Star of the Year” by Urban X Award in 2011 and being named the “Female Performer of the Year” by the XRCO Awards for 2012 and 2013.
As a young girl, Asa Akira has always thought of the adult film industry as intriguing and glamorous. Although this early attraction to the porn industry was present, the path to being part of the industry wasn’t smooth sailing at all.
From being a cashier at a children’s bookstore, a teacher’s assistant at a preschool and to working as an intern for high-fashion magazine V (which Asa Akira, in retrospect, claimed to be “the most degrading thing” she’s ever done), Asa Akira started getting a taste of the adult industry at the age of 19 when she started working as a dominatrix. Later on, she moved on to stripping. This did not last for too long as its novelty soon wore off as she did not favor the task of asking johns if they wanted company. Ultimately, claiming that she was “a bad salesperson.”
Being flown out to LA by an agency to jumpstart her career, Asa Akira initially thought that she would spend only 2 years in the porn industry. With milestones achieved and a string of awards to boot, she evidently had no reason to make an exit. Today, she does not only perform in front of the camera, but goes behind the scenes as a film director as well.
Being part of the new era of porn as an empowered feminist, Asa Akira takes pride in what she does, claiming that there is nothing else that she would rather be doing. In May 2014, she wrote a memoir entitled “Insatiable: Porn-A Love Story”, where she recounts the various events in her life as a porn star.
Although not claiming that she is bisexual, Asa Akira has stated that she is attracted to both males and females. She admits that her sexual orientation is what you call “indefinable.” On December 2012, she married Toni Ribas, a Spanish pornographic actor and director, and has been with him ever since.
