2NE1 – Korean Music Group

January 26th, 2015

2NE1 is a four-member South Korean girl group that debuted in 2009 and brought the K-Pop industry into a frenzy filled with candy pop funky fashion, the edgiest and most unthinkable hairstyles and an abundance of sass and women empowerment. The group is managed by YG Entertainment, from which the biggest K-pop artists such as Big Bang and PSY also hail. 2NE1 is comprised of feisty, talented and charismatic members, namely CL (Lee Chaerin), Minzy (Gong Minji), Dara (Sandara Park) and Bom (Park Bom). Their music genre is a mix of electropop and dance with a heavy influence of hiphop and R&B.

The name 2NE1 is pronounced as “twenty one” or “to anyone one”, which altogether means “The New Evolution of the 21st century.” This name speaks of the group’s goal to bring a new and fresh wave of original, defiant, and empowering music.

On March 2009, 2NE1 released “Lollipop” featuring Big Bang, a digital single that served as a promotional song for CYON cellular phone. This stint did not serve as their official debut into the music industry, the hit proved to be well loved and accepted by many as it charted #1 on M.Net’s online chart for four consecutive weeks. It also gained positive results in various music channels and online charts.

Not long after their initial public exposure with “Lollipop”, the official debut of 2NE1 took place. On May 2009, the group released their first single “Fire” and performed the song on Inkigayo, the music program of SBS. The song was well loved by many and rose to the top in music charts. On July 2009, “I Don’t Care” and “2NE1” were released, their second single and their first mini-album respectively. These releases gained such positive feedback from the public that the group won the Grand Prize at the 11th M.Net Asian Music Awards.

In 2010, the group released their first full-length album called “To Anyone.” The album included chart topping hits such as “Follow Me”, “Clap Your Hands”, “Go Away”, “Can’t Nobody” and “It Hurts”, providing the audience with a variety of funky, catchy and fresh tunes that captured the hearts of many. The group established itself as a heavy contender in the K-Pop industry as they won Artist of the Year and Album of the Year at the 12th M.Net Asian Music Awards on the same year.

The success of 2NE1 continued soaring in the following years. In 2011, the group released their second mini-album “Ugly”, featuring songs “I Am the Best”, “Ugly”, “Lonely” and “Don’t Cry”, all of which landed on the number 1 position in music charts. The group then made their Japanese debut on 2012, following the release of several chart topping Korean and Japanese hits on the same year until 2014. Among these hits that established the group as the Queens of K-pop are “Falling In Love” “Missing You”, “Happy”, “Come Back Home”, and “Gotta Be You.”
