2NE1 is a four-member South Korean girl group that debuted in 2009 and brought the K-Pop industry into a frenzy filled with candy pop funky fashion, the edgiest and most unthinkable hairstyles and an abundance of sass and women empowerment. The group is managed by YG Entertainment, from which the biggest K-pop artists such as Big Bang and PSY also hail. 2NE1 is comprised of feisty, talented and charismatic members, namely CL (Lee Chaerin), Minzy (Gong Minji), Dara (Sandara Park) and Bom (Park Bom). Their music genre is a mix of electropop and dance with a heavy influence of hiphop and R&B.
The name 2NE1 is pronounced as “twenty one” or “to anyone one”, which altogether means “The New Evolution of the 21st century.” This name speaks of the group’s goal to bring a new and fresh wave of original, defiant, and empowering music.
On March 2009, 2NE1 released “Lollipop” featuring Big Bang, a digital single that served as a promotional song for CYON cellular phone. This stint did not serve as their official debut into the music industry, the hit proved to be well loved and accepted by many as it charted #1 on M.Net’s online chart for four consecutive weeks. It also gained positive results in various music channels and online charts.
The success of 2NE1 continued soaring in the following years. In 2011, the group released their second mini-album “Ugly”, featuring songs “I Am the Best”, “Ugly”, “Lonely” and “Don’t Cry”, all of which landed on the number 1 position in music charts. The group then made their Japanese debut on 2012, following the release of several chart topping Korean and Japanese hits on the same year until 2014. Among these hits that established the group as the Queens of K-pop are “Falling In Love” “Missing You”, “Happy”, “Come Back Home”, and “Gotta Be You.”
